Description

You’re invited to the Hope Starts Here 2019 Summit and the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new early childhood center at Marygrove! This summit will celebrate progress of the Hope Starts Here framework and uplift the incredible work being done in Detroit to support our youngest children. At the 2019 Summit, we’ll honor the stories of our providers, professionals and families who have worked together across Detroit to advance our shared vision of a Detroit that puts its children first.

Immediately before the summit, we will celebrate the groundbreaking for the new early childhood center at Marygrove. This brand-new early childhood center, scheduled to open in Fall 2021, will anchor the cradle-to-career campus at Marygrove to provide a high-quality early educational experience for over 100 children and families from birth to age 5. As with Hope Starts Here, partners on the cradle-to-career campus are connecting lessons and legacies of Detroit with those learned from other cities. The goal is to create both a center for its immediate children and families as well as a resource for other early learning providers in the community. Speakers at the groundbreaking include representatives from the center’s developer, operator, construction manager, architect, and other partners.

At the Hope Starts Here 2019 Summit, you’ll hear from:

  • Mayor Mike Duggan, City of Detroit

  • Denise Smith, Hope Starts Here’s first Implementation Director

  • Dr. Nkechy Ezeh, Founder & CEO, Grand Rapids Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative

  • Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, Chief Medical Executive & Chief Deputy Director, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services

  • La June Montgomery Tabron and Rip Rapson, Co-Chairs of the Hope Starts Here Stewardship Board

  • Additional national speakers to be confirmed!

During the Design Workshops, you’ll hear about ways Detroiters can become part of the Detroit Champions of Hope network to advocate for different priorities to support our children and families:

  • Grassroots Organizing for Detroit’s Children

  • The Art and Science of Data: Using Data to Better Support Children and Families

  • Inspiring Spaces: Creating Quality Early Childhood Facilities in Detroit

  • Turning Hope into Reality: How You Can Support Policy Change that Puts Children and Families First

Through the day, Ideation Stations will provide opportunities to network with early childhood leaders across the city, learn about innovative programs and services in Detroit, and share your ideas on how to best serve families in our community.

Organized by

Hope Starts Here is Detroit’s Early Childhood Partnership that has engaged families, businesses, child education and health experts, and the larger community in creating a vision to ensure that children are born healthy, prepared for kindergarten, and on track for success by third grade and beyond. Launched in 2016, the Hope Starts Here process engaged over 18,000 Detroit residents and families, creating a Detroit's first early childhood framework that represents the priorities of Detroit's families, caregivers and community partners. Since the launch of the Hope Starts Here framework in 2017, Detroit's early childhood partners have been working to implement the framework in close coordination and collaboration, ensuring that we are all working towards a common vision of seeing Detroit as a city that puts its children first.
